Golden hour — the 30-60 minutes before sunset — is the most flattering light in photography. In San Diego, this window is longer, more consistent, and more vivid than almost anywhere in the country.
Why San Diego Is Ideal
- 266+ sunny days per year
- Pacific Ocean horizon means vivid, colorful sunsets
- Low coastal humidity — no haze to mute colors
- Year-round warmth for outdoor evening shoots
Best Locations for Golden Hour Photos
- Sunset Cliffs Natural Park — dramatic ocean cliffs
- La Jolla Cove — sea caves and golden water reflections
- Balboa Park — architecture amplified by warm light
- Del Mar Bluffs — blufftop above the Pacific
- Coronado Beach — wide sand and Hotel del Coronado silhouettes
How to Plan Your Timeline
Work backwards from sunset. If sunset is at 7:30 PM, plan portraits for 6:45-7:30 PM. Schedule your ceremony to end by 6:00 PM at the latest.
What month has the best golden hour in San Diego?
October and November offer the most dramatic colors. June and July give the longest windows due to later sunsets.
Golden hour is just one piece of the puzzle. See our step-by-step wedding photo timeline guide for how to build your whole day around it, and our guide to San Diego’s best photography-friendly venues for where to shoot it.
