Why Alphares Studio Is One of San Diego Best Wedding Photography Studios
June 7, 2026La Jolla and Coronado are the two most requested wedding portrait locations in San Diego — and for good reason. Both offer world-class scenery within 30 minutes of downtown, and both photograph spectacularly at any time of year. Here is what to know about shooting at each.
La Jolla: Sea Caves, Cove, and Coastal Cliffs
La Jolla is a coastal village 15 miles north of downtown San Diego with some of the most diverse and dramatic natural scenery in Southern California.
La Jolla Cove
The iconic cove with turquoise water, sea caves, and cliffs. Sea lions frequently populate the rocks, adding an unexpected and charming element to portraits. Best photographed at sunrise (before tourist crowds arrive) or late afternoon golden hour. Free and open to the public.
Coast Walk Trail and Caves
The cliffside trail above the cove offers dramatic ocean views and rock formations perfect for intimate couple portraits. Less crowded than the main cove. Requires some walking — wear appropriate shoes.
La Jolla Shores Beach
Wide, open sandy beach just north of the cove — excellent for walking portraits and reception venue photo opportunities at the adjacent La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
La Valencia Hotel
The iconic pink hotel perched above the village with Pacific views. One of the most elegant portrait backdrops in San Diego. Weddings held on-property offer access to the cliffside terrace.
Coronado: The Island, the Beach, and Hotel del Coronado
Coronado sits on a peninsula just minutes from downtown San Diego via the Bay Bridge — creating a feeling of a world apart while remaining completely accessible.
Coronado Beach
Consistently ranked among the best beaches in the United States. Wide white sand, gentle Pacific surf, and the dramatic silhouette of the Hotel del Coronado make every photo extraordinary. Less photographic distraction than La Jolla — cleaner compositions.
Hotel del Coronado
The iconic Victorian resort with red turret roofs, white beach, and manicured grounds. One of the most recognized buildings in California and a spectacular wedding venue and portrait backdrop. Available for venue rental — portraits require coordination with hotel photography policies.
Centennial Park and Bay Views
The bay-facing side of Coronado offers downtown San Diego skyline views across the bay — a completely different visual palette from the Pacific side. Beautiful at blue hour when the skyline lights up.
Timing and Permits
Both La Jolla and Coronado are public spaces — no permit required for small parties (under 25 people). Larger groups and official ceremonies require permits from the City of San Diego or State Parks. Alphares Studio can advise on permit requirements for any location.
