Affordable Wedding Photography in San Diego: What You Get at Every Price Point
June 7, 2026Booking a wedding photographer without asking the right questions is one of the most common mistakes couples make. Here are the 20 questions that experienced wedding planners, photographers, and married couples wish everyone asked before signing a contract.
About Experience and Portfolio
- How many weddings have you photographed? — Look for at least 30-50 complete events. Under 10 means still building experience.
- Can I see two or three complete wedding galleries? — Highlight reels only show the best 30 shots. Full galleries show consistency.
- Have you photographed at my venue before? — Familiarity means better light knowledge and backup plan awareness.
- What is your primary editing style? — Bright and airy, dark and moody, natural? Make sure it matches what you love.
About the Day-Of Logistics
- Who will actually shoot our wedding — you, or someone on your team? — Many studios send associates. Know whose work you are booking.
- Will there be a second shooter? — Two photographers capture moments one person physically cannot.
- How many weddings do you shoot per weekend? — Double-booking on the same day is a red flag.
- What time do you arrive? — You want them set up and ready before the action starts.
- How do you handle a venue that bans flash? — Reveals low-light competency.
About Backup Plans and Contracts
- What is your backup plan if you have an emergency? — Non-negotiable. Must have a documented plan.
- Is the backup photographer at the same quality level? — Ask to see backup portfolio.
- What happens if equipment fails during the reception? — Do they carry redundant bodies and memory cards?
- What does your contract say about cancellation and rescheduling? — Both yours and theirs.
About Deliverables and Editing
- How many edited images will we receive? — 400-800 is standard for full-day coverage.
- What is your delivery timeline? — Get a specific date, not vague language.
- Will we receive the full-resolution files? — You should own your images. Low-resolution delivery only is a red flag.
- Do you offer a sneak peek? — 10-20 images within 48-72 hours is a common professional courtesy.
- Can we print the images anywhere? — Some photographers require printing through their lab only.
About Pricing and Rights
- What is included in each package? — Hours, number of photographers, video included or not, album included or not.
- Do we own the images or do you retain copyright? — Standard is a personal use license for the couple; the photographer retains copyright but grants unlimited personal use rights.
Red Flags in the Answers
Be cautious if a photographer: cannot show a full gallery, has no written backup plan, is vague about who will actually shoot your wedding, does not offer a written contract, or prices significantly below market without explanation.
